Nokia-Microsoft announcement spikes WP7 activity, but...

Interesting numbers. Very early data, but the spike is to be expected. All die-hard Symbian developer will need to make a move somewhere, right? Obviously they will try out WP7 at this point. Questions is how long it will last since earliest Nokia product with the platform will ship 4Q2001 earliest and no one, I mean NO ONE, announced a new WP7 product at MWC this week... It was all about Android.

Anyway, back to the numbers. Flurry doesn't cover Symbian, but my prediction is the developer activity as of this week has plummeted to the ground. Also, with the weak showing of MeeGo from Intel developers should run the other way as fast as they can.

Also, if I was at RIM, these number would concern me too. If they are a trend, the platform is in big trouble looking from the application support side, but they are in deeper trouble than that anyway. Great article covering Blackberry problems, http://j.mp/dMjVhS.

RIM acquires user interface design firm The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) | FP Posted | Financial Post

This is a strong move in a good direction for RIM. TAT has a really great core of interaction and art designers with a proven track record.

My prediction is this for TAT in 2011. The talented core will be offered a nice package to move to the US (10-15 people). A lot of the sales and BD people will be let go since they will now only deliver to RIM. By the end of the year the Swedish offices will close down. And that will end another great Swedish telco success from the pre-iphone era.

Twitter for Android updated to catch up to iPhone app

It got worse tbh. The previous version followed the Android guidelines closer and had a better user experience. This update is just a watered down "compatible" UX. Uninstalled. Go Tweetdeck instead.

Windows Phone apps are more expensive than iPhone apps - O'Reilly Radar

These are typical stats for early app store traffic. Over time avg price will go down and also the category distribution will change. Early on tools and utilities get more traffic until users settle into the platform and features. Books are sure to go high on WP7 as well once as a good reader surfaces or kindle moves in.

HTML5 Video gaining ground on the Web

Well, the adoption has been a lot faster than anticipated so I assume Flash is bye bye soon in that aspect and mobile is the driving factor. Anyone finding any "real" use for the flash player on Android? I uninstalled it a long time ago.

Symbian CEO Lee Williams steps down

Well, maybe to early to say R.I.P. Symbian, but it is inevitable. Competition is way past in both feature set and UX philosophy. In my experience Symbian was run by academics with very little "real world" foundation. They did a great job meeting operator requirements, but not so great understanding actual user needs. At this point of time it is more like good riddance for me. Let's see if MeeGo can challenge. I remain sceptic.

Interesting stats. Great business case for OEMs to extend portfolio with touch phone. Great business case for tablets too.

Intel says no MeeGo phones until first half of 2011...

While Nokia remains mum about the status of its first MeeGo handset, Doug Fisher, Vice President of Intel's Software and Solutions Group and General Manager of Systems Software Division, is being decidedly more talkative. According to an interview published by Forbes, MeeGo phones and tablets are in the works but we'll have to wait until 2011 to handle them. Specifically, Fisher says that MeeGo based cellphones won't debut until the first half of next year, possibly at a large industry trade show. Hmm, could that be Mobile World Congress by any chance, scheduled for February 2011? It's also worth noting that Fisher's timeline coincides with plans for a MeeGo 1.2 release tentatively scheduled for sometime around the end of April. This is of course disappointing -- especially after seeing Nokia's amazing looking MeeGo-based N9 (pictured) in that supposed leak. Though it's hardly unexpected given all the executive level changes at Nokia. Remember, back in December Nokia had promised to "deliver" a Maemo 6 powered mobile computer in the second half of 2010. That promise was then seemingly reiterated when the joint MeeGo initiative was announced in February (MeeGo being the union Maemo and Intel's Moblin). It was during that announcement that Intel and Nokia promised to "launch" MeeGo devices from Nokia and other manufactures in 2010. We took that to mean retail delivery, not just a product annoucement. In fact, we've already seen the first MeeGo tablet -- the WeTab -- ship in Germany. And Fisher says that other MeeGo devices like netbooks and Internet Connected TVs are still on track to ship this year.

Wow, another delay. At this time Android domination is in play. Iphone still strong. WinPhone7 has had a 6 month run and we will see where that takes them. MeeGo has to be extremely good to take a top spot. Not sure it has the wheels to do that...

Nokia delays flagship N8 again

"A single device does not normally have a significant impact on Nokia's ... development. But with the N8 the firm has much more at stake."

And it is a fact that if the new verion of Symbian Foundation nextgen OS doesn't fly its days of excitence is numbered. MeeGo is Nokia's big bet to reclaim the smartphone throne (or at least regain some coolness factor) - we will see whether it can compete in a few months.

Me personal opinion is that, from what I've seen, is just another N97 fail. The N8 HW is underspecced, the OS is nothing more than a slight cosmetic enhancement to previous version and this will be the evident beginning to an end for Symbian. The delay itself, and the way it was announced, just emphasizes the facts that the product is not good enough for mass consumption.

Digital Agencies of the Future

Interesting to see that some of the "finest" digital agencies has still not adopted HTML5 and ensured a proper mobile entry point... Disappointing since I believe in 'Walk the Talk'.
